Built on local milk and fruit

Invest Srpska names milk, fruit and vegetable processing as the most competitive parts of the food industry, and the region's largest food companies bear this out.

Mlijekoprodukt in Kozarska Dubica, part of the Imlek group, collects about 160,000 litres of milk a day from more than 1,500 farms and makes over 200 dairy products. Mljekara Pađeni in Bileća processes up to 100,000 litres a day. Prijedorčanka turns fruit into juice concentrates, frozen fruit and distillates, and its distillation column handles 150 tonnes of pomace a day.

Main product groups

Dairy

Fresh and fermented milk, yoghurt, sour cream, white and hard cheeses, kajmak and the traditional sir iz mješine. Large dairies sell across Bosnia and Herzegovina and export to the EU, Serbia and Montenegro.

Fruit and vegetables

Juice concentrates, deep-frozen berries and stone fruit, dried plums, jams and pickled vegetables. The raw material comes from orchards in the north and centre of the region.

Meat

Poultry, beef and pork processing, cured and smoked meats. Foreign investors include Perutnina Ptuj from Slovenia. Exports of animal products need an approved establishment and veterinary certification for each destination.

Bakery, confectionery and pasta

Milling, industrial bakery, biscuits and wafers. Mira in Prijedor, part of the Croatian group Kraš, has made biscuits there since 1928.

Beer and soft drinks

Banjalučka pivara, founded in 1873 by Trappist monks and now part of the Finnish Olvi Group, brews Nektar and other brands. Mineral and spring water is bottled in Kozluk and other spa areas.

Brandy, wine, honey and tea

Plum and other fruit brandies, Herzegovinian wines from Vranac and Žilavka grapes, honey and bee products, herbal teas. Many of these are small batches from family producers.

Foreign investors already present

Invest Srpska lists Perutnina Ptuj (Slovenia), Kraš (Croatia), Swisslion and Imlek (Serbia), Kreis Industriehandel (Switzerland) and Olvi Group (Finland) among the international food companies operating in the region. For a buyer, this means established cold chains, quality systems and experience with export paperwork in at least part of the supply base.

Sourcing checklist

Agree a written specification and shelf life, and the packaging and labelling language. Ask for HACCP or ISO 22000, IFS or BRCGS where your retailer requires them, and halal or kosher where relevant. For animal products, check the plant's approval for your market. Confirm minimum order quantities and seasonality. Green Srpska shows a certificate on a profile only after seeing it.
